SPI was established in 2015 as a response to those displaced by the conflict in the Middle East and North Africa Regions. At Small Projects Istanbul (SPI) we are working closely with a community consisting of more than 250 refugee families. Living in another country brings many difficulties and challenges, which can only be overcome with a shared responsibility and solidarity This is why the sense of community building is so important for SPI.
These people have fled their home countries with the desire to build a better and saver life for their families. are now running into even greater financial uncertainty and at risk of not being able to afford their basic needs, food, hygiene supplies, rent and utilities. Currently there are more than 3.6 million registered Syrian refugees and around 365.000 refugees from other nationalities in Turkey.
Families, already vulnerable from being forced to flee their countries. Their livelihood opportunities have taken away, many people are losing their jobs, incomes are reduced for those who are forced to stay at home. The sudden outbreak of the novel COVID 19 has brought uncertainty and fear to all human-kind yet the communities suffering from displacement have become even more vulnerable in relation to the consequences of their health and livelihoods.
